Storybanking and Social Media Resources
Half in Ten has developed resources and tools for advocates using personal stories and social media to fight poverty.
Storybanking Resources
Sharing personal stories about programs building shared prosperity is one powerful way to illustrate the impact deep cuts to these programs can have on ordinary people. To learn how to use stories for advocacy, view or download this Half in Ten webinar. The webinar features prominent antipoverty experts and grassroots advocates who outline best practices for collecting and submitting stories and describe how to incorporate stories into your advocacy with members of Congress.
Speakers also explain how to use state-level data in a way that pairs the personal stories with statistics to make a compelling case for responsible deficit reduction. You can find more than 100 stories from people across the country whose lived have been changed by federal programs on the Road to Shared Prosperity, an interactive map released by Half in Ten and the Coalition on Human Needs.
Social Media Resources
Social media is another excellent way to connect with the antipoverty community and engage lawmakers. View this Half in Ten training webinar to learn how to harness the power of social media for antipoverty advocacy. In this webinar, Alan Rosenblatt, Associate Director of Online Advocacy for the Center for American Progress Action Fund, explains how antipoverty advocates and grassroots organizations can use social media such as Twitter and Facebook to reach out to new supporters, respond to policy developments, and engage with members of Congress.
For more resources on utilizing social media, the Center for American Progress Action Fund has put together an excellent guide on Twitter basics and an advanced guide for more experienced users. Half in Ten also manages a social media directory of advocacy organizations fighting poverty. To view the directory, click here.
